Description

Metrichecking is a rapid and effective way to diagnose endometritis in a cow.

Endometritis is a post-calving bacterial uterine infection. It is one of the most common causes of infertility in Irish spring calving dairy herds.

Teagasc Moorepark studies have shown an average of 10% of cows have detectable endometritis when metrichecked 30-days post-calving. If left undetected or untreated, these animals are at high risk of culling due to failure to go in calf on time.

For each 1% improvement in 6-week calving rate, there is an associated increase in farm profitability of €9.26/cow/year, (Teagasc 2020).

Cows which are most at risk to have Endometrial infection are cows that have;

  • Been Induced
  • Had Difficult Calving’s
  • Had Twins
  • Had Milk Fever
  • Retained Cleanings
  • Had a stillborn calf
  • A vulval discharge greater than 7 days after calving

Batch Metrichecking starting 4 weeks after the beginning of calving and repeating every 21 days for three herd checks is the most effective method for effectively identifying and treating dirty cows.

Dirty cows left untreated have significantly lower fertility and will impact your herd’s overall in-calf rates.

Each device comes with 3 cups, one attached and 2 spares.
